LANDMAN


JOB TITLE: LANDMAN
JOB DESCRIPTION: A Landman is responsible for purchasing leases on acreage that an oil company thinks contains oil and gas. They assist in checking public records to verify who actually owns various pieces of land and to determine the actual boundaries of that ownership. The landman obtains the proper documents and data so that the company may obtain leases on acreage it is interested in. It is the landman's responsibility to enter new data on maps of oil fields, to obtain acreage information and to file documents for public record as required by law. Landmen are required to assemble data and maps in connection with acreage rental expiration deadlines which help determine whether the company should renew or continue lease agreements. The experienced landman will review and evaluate lease recommendations and other data for presentation to management.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: A Bachelor's Degree in Petroleum Land Management or a business-related curriculum is generally required to become a landman.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:  
ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES: Landmen can progress through a number of more responsible positions in the Land Department. Advancement is determined by performance on the job and ability to take on difficult assignments.
