GEOPHYSICIST

JOB TITLE:	GEOPHYSICIST
JOB DESCRIPTION:	Geophysicists apply their knowledge of geology, physics, and computer technology to search for oil and natural gas. Geophysicists must combine their knowledge of rocks and minerals, and gravitational and magnetic characteristics they display, the physics of producing and recording elastic and electromagnetic waves in the earth, and the reproduction and interpretation of the resulting seismic signals to pinpoint areas below the earth's surface where accumulations of oil and gas might occur. Geophysicists may supervise or participate in the operation of seismic field parties engaged in recording seismic data; they may work in the area of processing seismic data on sophisticated computer equipment; or they may be engaged in the interpretation of various geophysical data that has been gathered and processed by others. Geophysicists and geologists frequently work as teams since both geological and geophysical data are integrated to define good drilling prospects for oil and natural gas. Geophysicists apply both their technical and managerial skills primarily to exploration phase of the oil industry.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:	Generally a Bachelor's Degree in Geophysics, Physics, or Geology is required. Exposure to both physics and geology is highly desirable.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:	Opportunities also exist for Master's Degree and PhD holders in Geophysics, Physics, or Geology. A strong interest in and orientation towards math and science is desirable.
ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES:	Geophysicists can generally advance one of two ways - either as a technical specialist moving to progressively more challenging assignments or as a supervisor up through the ranks of management. Job performance and personal preference determine which route an individual takes and how far they go.
