JOB TITLE:	GEOLOGIST
JOB DESCRIPTION:	Geologists apply their knowledge of different rocks and minerals to search for oil and natural gas. these rocks and minerals, and the oil and gas they sometimes contain or surround, are found at different depths below the surface and in different structures. Geologists compile vast amounts of data on underground structures and on rocks where oil and gas have been found; they categorize and correlate this data; and, with the aid of new scientific developments, develop maps of the earth's crust. In a sense, geologists create maps of the earth as it may have existed during different geologic eras. They prepare vertical-slice cross-sections, or side views , which show up anticlines, faults, and other features that resulted from changes in the earth over the span of millions of years. From these maps and cross-sections, together with knowledge of rocks, minerals, oil, and gas, the geologist tries to predict where oil and gas can be found. Geologists apply both their technical and managerial skills primarily to the exploration phase of the oil industry.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:	Generally a Master's Degree in Geology is required. This will usually take five to six years of college-level study.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES:	Geologists can generally advance one or two ways - either as a technical specialists moving to progressively more challenging assignments or as a supervisor up through the ranks of management. Job performance and personal preference determines which route an individual takes and how far they go.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:	Opportunities also exist for Bachelor's Degree and PhD holders in Geology. The oil industry generally prefers candidates who have studied "soft rock" geology. A strong interest in and orientation toward math and science is desirable.
