API-Delta Chapter Teacher
Excellence Award Program

The Delta Chapter of the American Petroleum Institute, a non-profit organization headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana, annually recognizes teachers in each of six (6) parishes in the metropolitan area: Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, and St. Tammany. The Teaching Excellence Award Program was established in 1987 by the Delta Chapter to pay tribute to and reinforce outstanding teaching in public school systems.

The organization is committed to public education, and to that end has chosen to recognize the untiring efforts of public school teachers who continue to deliver quality services to students with minimal compensation and, often, inadequate resources.

The selection criteria, reviewed by a Committee of API members, includes commitment to teaching, resourcefulness, professional involvement and community service. The outstanding teacher model is one whose performance will positively impact students for the remainder of their lives.

To date, Delta Chapter has awarded over $100,000 to veteran and new teachers in the public schools of the metropolitan area. The cash awards are presented to the honorees at the school board meetings in May or June annually.

Additionally, teachers, their principals, and the Superintendent of Schools were invited to a special awards luncheon on April 25, 2001 at the Holiday Inn Superdome on Loyola Avenue, New Orleans at which time they were recognized by the API membership and presented with an Outstanding Teacher Award framed certificate.

The Delta Chapter of API maintains a commitment to provide improved educational opportunities for children in the community not only by honoring teachers but also by continuing its support of the LA Children’s Museum “ Hoist Away” Exhibit and annual Super Science Saturday.
